Research Interests
Dr. Kwame Owusu Amoah is an Animal Nutritionist with over 13 years of experience with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research - Animal Research Institute (CSIR-ARI). His area of specialization is animal nutrition, specifically, pig and poultry nutrition. His research focuses on feed evaluation, utilization of agro-industrial by-products (AIBP) as alternative feed resources, investigating eco-friendly and natural substitutes for antimicrobial growth promoters, the application and optimization of feed additives etc. He has been involved in training livestock and poultry farmers nationwide at research-extension-farmer linkage and pig farmers association workshops. He has been part of several donor-funded projects and consultancies like the West Africa Agricultural Productivity Programme (WAAPP), the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA), Food and Drugs Authority (FDA)-Ghana etc. He has over 30 publications in training manuals and peer-reviewed articles.
Current Research
Several AIBP have been considered as feed resources in the feeding of livestock. Nevertheless, other potential ones have not been adequately studied. Rice bran (RB) has been identified as one such product that is relatively inexpensive, readily available and can be used as an alternative to maize. However, the high fibre content limits its inclusion level in the diets of monogastric farm animals. Hence, to optimize the use of RB in the diets of pigs, ways to increase its digestibility must be explored. In recent times, attention is being drawn to the use of microorganisms as a biological tool to break down the highly indigestible fibre components present in AIBPs. This study investigates the solid-state fermentation of rice bran using indigenous microorganisms (IMO) and its use in the diets of pigs.
