Research

Research Interests

Dr. Gifty Ziema Bumbie is an Animal Nutritionist with more than 10 years of experience with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research- Animal Research Institute (CSIR-ARI). She specializes in the nutrition of animals, particularly poultry and pigs. Her research focuses on monogastric gut health and welfare, evaluation of the chemical and nutritional value of feeds ingredients, including agro industrial by product-based diets and feed supplements for commercial pig and poultry production, improving the quality of pork through dietary manipulation, feed additives and their impact on production of monogastrics etc. She has been involved in several consultancies which have positively impacted Ghana’s livestock industry. She has been involved in training livestock and poultry farmers nationwide at research-extension-farmer linkage and pig farmers’ association workshops. She has over 15 articles in internationally and locally recognized peer reviewed journals.

Current Research

Part of the team working on the isolation and identification of Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) from cereal that can be used as probiotics in the pig and poultry industry. This project seeks to explore the use of LAB as an alternative to the use of antibiotic in the livestock industry. The main objective of this project is to identify potentially effective probiotic strains, their functional traits, and their impact on the livestock and poultry industry.
