    Research Interest
  • Improve the quality of pork through dietary manipulation.
  • Evaluate the chemical and nutritional value of feeds ingredients including agro- industrial by-product-based diets and feed supplements for commercial pig production.

  • Feed additives (Vitamin D3 and 25-OH-D3) and their impact on egg production in layers

  • Current Research
    I am currently undergoing a PhD programme at the Southwest University, China. The research is focused on gut health of weaner and grower pigs with the aim to evaluate the impact of high fibre diet on performance, digestibility, meat quality and microbial ecology.

    Current Projects
  • Part of the team working on the Upscaling of Developed Locally Adapted Commercial Broiler Day-Old Chicks, a Korea Programme on International Agriculture (KOPIA) Ghana Centre and CSIR – Animal Research Institute Project, whose main objective is to improve and expand already existing nucleus population of broiler parent to serve as a renewable sustainable source of day-old chicks.

  • Part of the team working on the use of dietary Vitamin D3 and 25-OH-D3 HYD as feed additives in layer production, a project undertaken by Southwest University, college of Animal Science and DSM China. The main aim of the project is to assess the impact of these feed additives on bone mineralization, mRNA expression and egg quality in pullets and layers during a 100w production cycle
  • BRIEF PROFILE

    Ms. Gifty Ziema Bumbie is a Principal Technologist at the Farmed Animal Technology Development Division (FATDD) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research – Animal Research Institute (CSIR – ARI). She holds a Bachelor of Science (B. Sc) degree in Agriculture Technology (Animal Science Option) from the University for Development Studies, a Master of Philosophy (M. Phil) degree in Animal Science from the University of Ghana, Legon. She is currently a PhD candidate at the College of Animal Science and Technology, Southwest University, Chongqing, P. R. China. Her expertise centres on the nutrition of animals, science of feed of farm animals, waste management and good animal husbandry practices. Her research focuses on the development of feed packages with local feedstuffs and agro-industrial by-products for pig producers in Ghana, gut health of pigs and quality pork production through dietary manipulation. She has supervised national service personnels, interns and attachments students at the CSIR – ARI. She has been involved in several consultancies which have positively impacted Ghana’s pig production. She has presently had four peer-reviewed publications to her credit.
